Two people killed in Lenoir County from Hurricane Florence

Florence made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane at 7:15 a.m.at Wrightsville Beach, a few miles east of Wilmington, as the center of its eye moved onshore, the National Hurricane Center said.

A gust of 105 miles per hour was recorded at Wilmington airport, surpassing the power of Hurricane Fran two decades ago.

The hospital said it has received three injured patients.

According to Tom Collins, director of Pender County Emergency Management, a woman called 911 about a medical emergency at her home in Hampstead, but, due to downed trees, first responders were not able to get to her in time. The deaths also included that of a person killed while plugging in a generator, the governor's office said.

The National Hurricane Center is that Florence is just inland near Cape Fear North Carolina.

When Florence started battering eastern North Carolina with record rainfall, the Neuse and Trent rivers began to swell - and combined with high tide, made for unsafe flooding. "I see the beach communities being inundated with water and destruction that will be pretty, pretty epic in nature".

About 10 million people could be affected by the storm and more than one million were ordered to evacuate the coasts of the Carolinas and Virginia, jamming westbound roads and highways for miles. That number was down to 40 later in the day.

Utility companies said millions were expected to lose power and its restoration could take weeks. Rainfalls up to 40 inches (102 centimeters) in some places are expected in a region ranging from coastal North Carolina to northeastern SC, with flash flooding likely, according to the NHC. Power outages mounted until almost 700,000 customers were in the dark in North Carolina alone. The rainfall will cause catastrophic flash flooding and prolonged significant river flooding, the NHC said.

The storm is forecast to dump about 18 trillion gallons of rainwater on U.S. soil, most of it in North Carolina, meteorologist Ryan Maue tweeted.

Winds bent trees toward the ground and raindrops flew sideways as Florence moved in for an extended stay, with enough of its killer winds swirling overseas to maintain its power. The Wilmington airport had a wind gust clocked at 105 miles per hour (169 kph), the highest since Hurricane Helene in 1958, the weather service said. Expert scientists, however, had said they were anxious about Brunswick because of scant public information about its readiness. With Florence, "we're looking at the same amount of rainfall in three days". "You have somewhat of a culture that it won't happen in New Bern and it has happened in New Bern".

"I'm anxious about what I might find when I go home, though", she said.

"It was pretty bad".

As of Friday, the casino had reserved over 600 room nights for storm victims; another 200 families were expected to arrive on Sunday.

Her husband went to see if he could assist them but the water was chest high, she said. She plans to continue to ride out the storm.

FEMA teams were deployed to the city of New Bern late Thursday night, to conduct water rescue missions for people trapped on roofs or in their cars.

In the town of New Bern, 30,000 residents stayed behind in spite of mandatory evacuation orders.

The hurricane came ashore early Friday, pounding the state with torrential rain and high winds.

"I didn't think it was real when I heard they were giving out rooms", said Liebelt, a communications graduate student at the University of North Carolina.

A state of emergency has been declared in five coastal states - North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Maryland and Virginia.

Florence was seen as a major test for Fema, which was heavily criticised as slow and unprepared past year for Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.

The death toll attributed to Florence stands at 11, including 10 in North Carolina and one in SC.
