Trump disputes hurricane death toll in Puerto Rico

President Trump Denies Puerto Rico Hurricane Deaths, As Florence Hits Carolinas

As the southeastern US coastal states now face a looming threat from fast-approaching Hurricane Florence, Trump has for days revisited the USA government's performance in handling the aftermath of Maria's stunning blow to Puerto Rico and other hurricanes that hit the US mainland past year.

They extrapolated that data to estimate 4,600 people died as a direct result of the hurricane, including those who were not able to access vital medical treatment.

Politicians and pundits are furiously attacking the president for his unsupported assertions that almost 3,000 people did not die in Maria's wake and that the study that came up with the death toll of 2,975 was made up by Democrats to "make me look as bad as possible".

Trump's baseless allegations came in a string of Thursday tweets rejecting the official tally that found the catastrophic storm resulted in nearly 3,000 deaths.

Trump recently went on another Twitter rampage, this time lying about his recovery efforts for Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria and Irma. They then compared this baseline to the actual number of deaths, and voila!

Researchers attributed undercounting of storm-related deaths to poor communications and the lack of well-established guidelines and training for physicians on how to certify deaths in major disasters.

Trump was asked about his administration's handling of last year's storm in Puerto Rico as the government prepares for the impact of Hurricane Florence.

Stewart was being interviewed Wednesday about Trump's earlier statements that his administration's handling of the hurricane that hit the USA territory was "an incredible, unsung success" and "one of the best jobs that's ever been done".

As the United States braces itself for Hurricane Florence, it seems Trump is still determined to make people believe he did a great job during Hurricane Maria.

Today, President Donald Trump lashed out on Twitter (big surprise) about a pretty horrific statistic.

"Success? Federal response according to Trump in Puerto Rico a success?" Puerto Ricans are a key potential voting bloc in Florida's closely contested elections. "Bad politics. I love Puerto Rico!", he added.

Last month, Puerto Rican officials commissioned an independent study that declared an increased death toll to 2,975.

Members of both parties on Capitol Hill disagreed with the president's statements.

"I agree I've made mistakes", Rosselló said.
