Tracking the Tropics: Florence nears NC coast, watching Isaac

Hurricane Florence Won’t Be The Last To Hit The US This Season As More Form In Its Wake

The hurricane is now moving north at around 20km/h, and was expected to slow down today, becoming a tropical storm.

The tropical storm remnants are passing south of the island and moving west across the Caribbean region.

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for...

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles (165 km) from the centre. On the forecast track, Isaac's center is forecast to move across the central Lesser Antilles and into the eastern Caribbean Sea on Thursday. No storm watches or warnings have been issued for the Virgin Islands and the winds of Isaac are not expected to impact the territory. A warning is typically issued 36 hours before the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm- force winds, conditions that make outside preparations hard or unsafe.

A turn to the west-northwest is possible early next week if Isaac survives.

As of Tuesday, about 1.7 million people in North and SC and in Virginia have been urged to evacuate the coast, and hurricane watches and warnings extended across an area with about 5.4 million residents. The storm has 45 miles per hour sustained winds with higher-speed gusts. One system, moving toward Texas in the Gulf Coast, was forecast at a 70 percent chance of cyclone formation over the next 48 hours.

Friday's expected landfall near the NC/SC border will cause Florence to weaken as it interacts with the coast.

It's a detail that almost got lost among all the wind, rain and storm surge data sent out by the National Hurricane Center on Wednesday. Some flooding was forecast early in the day for parts of North Florida, but those forecasts were adjusted later to include high swells and minor coastal flooding at high tide.

The storm brought high storm surge near 13 feet and flooding rain as far as 40 miles inland of the storm.
