Lewis Hamilton streets ahead in title race after victory in Singapore

Formula One World Championship

Hamilton, now with one hand on the 2018 championship, was ecstatic with the result.

Going into the meeting this was supposed to be Ferrari's race.

Once Hamilton got a clean start at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, he controlled the race from the front and although he stretched his advantage over Sebastian Vettel to 40 points with six races remaining, the Briton admitted he was shattered. The British driver had nailed an extraordinary lap to take pole.

"No chance", he radioed his team moodily.

Britain's Lewis Hamilton extends his F1 championship lead as he makes most of pole position in Singapore.

"Qualifying is almost as important here as in Monaco so a little bit of work to do for tomorrow. So it was really quite a monumental moment for us as a team".

"When I got close to Lewis due to back markers I never really thought the pass would be possible", Verstappen continued. "There has been a slow improvement of our performance", he said. "Bigger or smaller. If we are a team, we fail and we win together, so I don't want to point my finger at Sebastian".

When the race re-started, Ferrari gambled on pitting first for new tires by bringing in Vettel first. They still have the quicker auto yet are failing to exploit it and the German is becoming frustrated as the title looks to be slipping away.

Vettel drifted away from Verstappen in the battle for second and ultimately came home a lowly third, his title ambitions taking a further hit. That's including Lewis' lap as an individual but also them as a team. He emerged behind a Force India and had fitted the ultrasoft tyres.

The Ferrari driver had executed the better launch only to have his advances rebuffed at the first turn, but he trailed the Dutchman closely all the way to Turn 7, where he swept around Verstappen's outside and into second place.

"I think we know where we stand".

"With the way we raced we didn't have a chance". "At the moment, we're a bit too far away so we still need to improve the vehicle a bit more. I would have loved to win in Germany, for sure, but I'm not too bothered, and I'm generally looking forward and not focusing on what we all could have done differently to avoid what happened".

Verstappen says that it was a shame he lost a place at the start, but praises the team for selecting a great strategy that helped him push back up to second place.

"I'm not entirely happy", he added. "I said before the weekend we can only beat ourselves and today we didn't get everything out of the package". "So that's the goal". The Mexican ran wide, nudging the Frenchman into the barrier and ending his race, triggering a safety auto that ran until the end of lap four.

He managed to go even quicker early on his second run and looked to have a shot at pole after sector two, but then Verstappen's engine cut out and he was forced to abandon his run.
