Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge breaks all-time marathon world record

Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge celebrates winning the Berlin Marathon alongside a clock showing his World Record breaking time

Eliud Kipchoge ran the race of his life on Sunday morning smashing Dennis Kimetto's four-year old World Record enroute to winning the Berlin Marathon running in a time of 2:01:39.

Kenya's Gladys Cherono crossed the finish line first in two hours, 18 minutes and 11 seconds to win the women's race at the 45 edition of the BMW Berlin Marathon.

Top put Kipchoge's new time into context, the last time the marathon world record was beaten by over 30 seconds was when Paul Tergat lowered Khalid Khannouchi's mark to 2:04:26.

"It was hard. I ran my own race, I trusted my trainers, my programme and my coach".

Kipchoge's run was the biggest improvement on the marathon mark since Australian Derek Clayton took nearly two and a half minutes off the record in 1967.

But, at the 30km mark Kipchoge was 52 seconds ahead of WR pace and the magic 2:02:57 mark was within sight again.

For months before the race, Kipchoge has maintained that he was focused on winning in Berlin.

At long last, the missing piece from Eliud Kipchoge's incredible résumé has been filled.

From an Irish perspective, his time would outstrip the best efforts of any Irish runner over the half-marathon.

The conditions were flawless for running - warm, sunny and with little wind - and Kipchoge showed no sign of easing off the pace as he passed the 18-mile mark.

The final pacemaker, Josphat Boit, led Kipchoge through the half-way point in 1:01:06 before dropping out at 25 kilometres, which was covered in 1:12:24.

Things looked to have fallen apart for Kipchoge's world record hopes after 15km. Ironically, it took a world record setting run by Kipsang in 2013 in Berlin to beat Kipchoge in what was just his second marathon since moving from the track.

The Newspaper added: "When Kipchoge actually enters a race, he sends ripples through the field before his races even begin".

It was a clean sweep for Kenya after Amos Kipruto came in second with 2:06:23 while Wilson Kipsang won with 2:06:48 as the unofficial time.

He won the London Marathon for a third time earlier this year and is the Olympic champion over the distance.
