Details emerge about Browns' decision to part ways with Josh Gordon

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon makes a catch during warmups before the game at First Energy Stadium

The Browns will release troubled wide receiver Josh Gordon. Team doctors evaluated Gordon's injury Saturday and were concerned that he was battling substance abuse issues, Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reports. After that, he didn't return to the gridiron until 2017. He caught a 17-yard touchdown pass in the Browns' season-opening 21-21 tie against the Steelers last weekend.

After not listing him on the injury report all week, the Browns announced Saturday afternoon that Gordon would be out for Sunday's game against the Saints due to a hamstring issue and would not be on the trip.

With his history of substance abuse, Cleveland simply couldn't afford to take any more chances with him. Gordon was upset about it, one of the sources said, surmising he was mad because he felt he had let down the team with the hamstring. Now, though, he'll be looking for a new home.

"For the past six years, the Browns have fully supported and invested in Josh, both personally and professionally and wanted the best for him", Browns general manager John Dorsey said in a statement.

Details are slowly starting to emerge surrounding the Cleveland Browns' shocking decision to move on from Josh Gordon.

After leading the league in receiving yards and being named an all-pro in 2013, the league suspended him indefinitely during the 2014 season after his fourth violation of the NFL's drug policy.

Although the Browns never provided an official reason behind Gordon's release, it was reported by The Athletic's Zac Jackson that Gordon was late to the team facility Saturday morning.
