Elon Musk's rocket company signed up its first passenger for a flight around the moon, taking a giant leap toward commercializing space travel - at least in terms of consumer demand.

SpaceX is set to send a private passenger on a spaceflight around the moon soon, as it's now signed up its first customer for the trip.

- Footprints on the Moon - Humans have not set foot on the Moon since the final Apollo mission in 1972, capping an era of USA national pride. "Find out who's flying and why on Monday, September 17", the company tweeted late Thursday.

The company said more details would be made available on Monday. In response Musk mysteriously tweeted an emoji of the Japanese flag.

However the passengers were never named and the flight has yet to materialise. Next July will mark the 50th anniversary of the first manned moon landing by Apollo 11's Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. "And we believe we can do this with the revenue we receive from launching satellites and servicing the space station".

The 35-story BFR will be powered by 31 of SpaceX's next-generation Raptor engines, with a rocket and spacecraft component - the Big Falcon Spaceship, or BFS.

In an interview in March, Musk said the ship was now being built, adding "I think we'll probably be able to do short flights, short sort of up-and-down flights, probably sometime in the first half of next year".

Musk described a slightly scaled-down 348-foot-tall rocket in September 2017 and announced that the private space company aimed to launch two cargo missions to Mars in 2022.
