FCC pauses clock on its review of T-Mobile/Sprint merger

FCC pauses 180-day shot clock on its review of T-Mobile-Sprint merger

Further, in an August 29, 2018 exparte meeting, T-Mobile executives Mike Sievert and Peter Ewens described T-Mobile's reliance on a business model, titled "Build 9", which apparently provides the financial basis for the projected new network buildout.

Among 7 analysts covering Sprint (NYSE:S), 1 have Buy rating, 0 Sell and 6 Hold.

The Federal Communications Commission said Tuesday it needs more time to review the planned merger of T-Mobile US Inc. and Sprint Corp.

The two firms had previously called off merger talks after failing to clinch mutually agreeable terms.

Sprint and T-Mobile first discussed a merger in 2014 but scrapped it because of concerns about regulatory challenges from the Obama administration. The companies had tried to merge twice in the past, but regulators and internal disagreements prevented it from happening. But after about 55 days into the process, the Commission has outlined a few reasons why it needs more time to review the merger.

The newly-provided network engineering model is significantly larger and more complex than the engineering submissions already in the record. The Commission did not receive Build 9, and third parties did not have access to it, until September 5.

The carriers want to merge and form one larger company that can compete against Verizon and AT&T, which are both bigger than T-Mobile and Sprint.

So, in essence, TMUS recently made a decision to offer up a bunch more material in support of the merger and the FCC needs more time to review it. The pair claim that the move will benefit the public by, among other things, increasing the rollout speed of their 5G networks.

Back in June, T-Mobile and Sprint officially filed their merger plans with the FCC.

The FCC says that its 180-day shot clock will remain paused until T-Mobile and Sprint have submitted all the documents that they intend to rely on and a "reasonable period of time" has passed for the FCC and third-party review.
