Jeff Fager Was Fired After Sending Warning Text to CBS News Reporter

60 Minutes Executive Producer Jeff Fager accepts the Institutional Award on stage during The 77th Annual Peabody Awards Ceremony at Cipriani Wall Street

Fager, who has denied the claims of harassment, released a statement confirming he was sacked because "I sent a text message to one of our CBS reporters" over her coverage of newer allegations against him that The New Yorker published Sunday.

"It is our commitment to uphold these policies at every level", CBS News President David Rhodes said in a statement. The allegations of misconduct will continue to be investigated independently, however. "Instead, they terminated my contract early because I sent a text message to one of our own CBS reporters demanding that she be fair in covering the story", Fager said.

Rhodes said Fager violated company policy but did not specify the policy.

Fager is the third major figure at CBS to lose his job in the past year over misconduct allegations, following news anchor Charlie Rose last November and CBS Corp.

After the text was shared on air, others at CBS also said they interpreted it as a threat.

In the New Yorker report, Fager is accused of inappropriate touching and of tolerating an abusive culture. Outside law firms were brought in to conduct investigations. Those allegations rode shotgun with the sexual-harassment and assault allegations against CBS chief executive Les Moonves, who resigned his position on Sunday, thanks to a fresh set of allegations from Farrow in the New Yorker.

According to anonymous sources speaking to The New York Times, former CBS CEO and Chariman Les Moonves's downfall was far from certain once the network became aware of the first allegations against the executive.

"Over the years, even when an actress managed to get one of my scripts through an agent, the deal would immediately be killed".

Sarah Johansen said that when she was an intern Fager allegedly groped her buttocks at a party, and she was later told this move was referred to as the 'Fager arm'. In this second meeting, with his own lawyers also present, Moonves admitted he knew about the police complaint, and he also revealed the existence of another accuser, whom he was now working to silence by offering her a job at CBS.

"60 Minutes" will enter its 51st season under the leadership of executive editor Bill Owens while the search for a new executive producer begins.

Moonves stepped down as chairman and CEO of CBS that day, but the board is still waiting for its internal probe to wrap up before deciding if he can be fired for cause and denied a payout.

He has been at CBS News for more than 35 years.

Rhodes' action against Fager also exacerbated the longstanding tensions between "60 Minutes" and the rest of the news division.
