Alabama Pastor Cuts Nike Apparel During Sermon

NFL bounces back from down TV ratings and Trump attacks with strong opening weekend

Some people are setting their Nike shoes on fire and boycotting the company because it has made Colin Kaepernick the face of its 30th anniversary "Just Do It" campaign.

Truett McConnell University in Cleveland, Georgia, released a statement Friday announcing the end of its partnership with Nike and detailing plans for the rest of its Nike merchandise.

According to data from Edison Trends, online sales of Nike products jumped 31 percent between the Sunday before and the Tuesday after Labor Day, almost double last year's 17 percent increase over the same time period.

Truett McConnell University is a small liberal arts college with a student population of 2,600 students. Last fall, Trump called for any "son of a bitch" who did not stand for the anthem to be fired, and he has been highly critical of Nike's new ad this month.

But they are not Nike's base Two-thirds of the company's sneaker customers are younger than 35, according to Matt Powell, a sports retail analyst at market research firm NPD Group.

Morris says his actions are in protest to the apparel company's advertising campaign that features Kaepernick, who knelt during the national anthem at football games to protest police brutality.

Nike did not immediately respond to messages from CBS News.

"If we have a contract, we'll honor it, but we strongly support law enforcement and strongly support our military and veterans who died to protect our freedoms and if the company really believes what Colin Kaepernick believes, it's going to be hard for us to keep doing business with them".

The press release noted that the university will no longer stock Nike-branded apparel in their campus story, and any profits from remaining Nike gear sold will go to the Wounded Warriors and the Fraternal Order of Police.

"If Nike chooses to apologize to our troops and to our law enforcement officers, then - and only then - will TMU reconsider the brand", Caner said.

The Quinnipiac poll also found that 49 percent approved of Nike's choice of Kaepernick for its "Just Do It" ad while 37 percent disapproved. "They are the true heroes".

Nike carefully weighed its choices with Kaepernick, and placed a strategic bet on the athlete-turned-social activist.
