Ump at center of Serena Williams firestorms breaks silence

Serena Williams had a heated exchange with chair umpire Carlos Ramos during the U.S. Open women's final

The WTA validated Williams' complaint that the penalties were sexist and would not have been initiated if Williams were a man. USTA President Katrina Adams said there was "no equality". "We do not believe that this was done".

Serena Williams of the United States argues with umpire Carlos Ramos during her Women's Singles finals match against Naomi Osaka of Japan on Day Thirteen of the 2018 US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on September 8, 2018.

Serena Williams embraces Naomi Osaka as she cries at the presentations. But in other matches, she has been able to turn it around.

If the contract goes through, this would be the biggest deal the sportswear giant has ever given to a female tennis player and it could propel Osaka up the ranks on Forbes' 2018 list of highest paid female athletes, which Williams now leads.

The tournament referee's office fined Williams $17,000 for infractions during her U.S. Open final match.

"When a woman is emotional, she's "hysterical" and she's penalised for it".

This incident highlights a need to consider changing the rules of tennis, to make them more consistent across tournaments and players.

"No one was saying she was a good sport, if they are they're insane", added King.

"We always had to go by the rules", Court, who dominated tennis during the 1960s and early 1970s, said according to a report in The Australian. Critics say his exaggerated depiction of Williams's physical features is reminiscent of historically racist cartoons and that he white washed the appearance of Japan's Osaka by drawing her with a blonde ponytail.

The cartoon, which features Williams mid-tantrum while a faceless Naomi Osaka speaks to umpire Carlos Ramos as he utters the words "Can't you just let her win?", was featured in Melbourne-based newspaper the Herald Sun. Her frustration with Ramos began when she was given a code violation for being coached in-match and breaking her racket shortly after.

The first strike issued to Williams - strike 1, a warning - was a code violation against her coach Patrick Mouratoglou for repeatedly gesturing to her to get forward during rallies.

During a changeover, Williams resumed her argument with the umpire, this time saying he was attacking her character and was a "thief".

"There are other examples of sexism in sport whether it comes down to prize money, the way male players are treated in comparison to women", she said.

Williams, furious over the first call, approached the net and told Ramos: "I don't cheat".

"I felt like he blew it", said King. "She's right about the guys being held to a different standard, there's no question".

"The umpiring fraternity is thoroughly disturbed at being abandoned by the WTA", Richard Ings, a former top-level umpire who is now retired, told ESPN on Tuesday.

"Carlos Ramos has been a professional umpire for four decades", said Ings.

"The decisions made by Ramos had nothing to do with sexism or racism".
