Yzerman steps down as Lightning GM, BriseBois takes over

NHL News Steve Yzerman will step down as the general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Julian Brise Bois will take over as team GM

The Athletic reported former assistant GM Julien BriseBois is expected to take over. But Holland could bring on Yzerman in another role.

The Lightning will announce at a 4 p.m. news conference that Steve Yzerman will step down as general manager.

Yzerman has spent the past eight seasons as general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning, including five playoff appearances, a trip to the 2015 Stanley Cup Final, and three consecutive Eastern Conference Final appearances in their last three playoff runs. Yzerman's family has remained in Detroit, and he commuted during his time on the job.

Muliple reports have indicated that Yzerman informed the Tampa Bay Lightning that he'll be stepping down as general manager, a position he's held in Tampa Bay since 2010.

That, coupled with Red Wings' GM Ken Holland inking a two-year extension last spring, will start the rumor mill that Yzerman could return to the organization where he spent all 22 seasons of his National Hockey League career.

A source told the Detroit Free Press that Yzerman told Lightning players in the meeting that he was going home to Detroit, the city where he was made a legend and still lives during the offseason.

Fans went a little nuts at the news Tuesday, wondering if Yzerman will eventually return to the Red Wings. Detroit is in rebuilding mode, while Tampa Bay has become a perennial contender and will again be a championship favorite this season.

This morning at the Ice Sports Forum in Brandon, about two dozen Lightning players worked out on their own in preparation for Thursday's first day of training camp. The other signing Lightning captain Steven Stamkos to an eight-year, $68-million deal in 2016. He's also had success developing homegrown talent, like Brayden Point and goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy, a Vezina Trophy finalist this past season.

"We felt it was important to let everyone know what we were doing, end any potential speculation", Yzerman said.
