Wife of Pakistan's jailed ex-PM Nawaz Sharif dies in London

Nawaz Sharif's wife Kulsoom Nawaz passes away in London

The former first lady of Pakistan is survived by her husband Nawaz Sharif and four children, Hassan, Hussain, Maryam and Asma.

Pakistan's government later made a decision to release Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz on parole to attend the funeral.

"The Pakistan High Commission in the United Kingdom has been directed to provide all possible assistance to facilitate the heirs of Mrs. Kulsoom Nawaz", his office said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Shehbaz Sharif will leave for the United Kingdom on the next available flight to bring back the body of his sister-in-law.

Sharif, three-time prime minister, is now serving a 10-year jail term in Pakistan following his conviction by a court on corruption charges.

She would not take to politics again until a year ago, after her husband - now prime minister again - was disqualified by the Supreme Court from holding a public office. In a statement, he said all facilities will be provided to the family and heirs of Kulsoom as per law.

She completed her Masters in Urdu literature from Lahore's prestigious Foreman Christian College University in 1970, and soon after married Mr Sharif, who came from a family of wealthy industrialists.

Her first direct exposure to the harsh political landscape of Pakistan came in October 1999 when her husband's government was toppled and he was imprisoned.

Kulsoom Nawaz Sharif died after months in a coma.

Begum Kulsoom Nawaz received her early education at Madrassa-Tul-Banat. Due to her illness, Kulsoom was unable to return and formally take oath as a member of the National Assembly. And when he was arrested by the Musharraf regime in the 1999 coup, she spearheaded the campaign for his release. "She's contributed famously to my father's life and to democracy in Pakistan".

Moreover, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) director-general took to Twitter and said that Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Bajwa also expressed grief over the demise of Kulsoom Nawaz.

Politicians from various political parties and high-level government officials also expressed deep grief over the death.

"I pray to the Almighty to grant eternal peace to Begum Sahiba and strength to you and the bereaved family to bear this irreparable loss", the letter read further.
