There is a coup from within the White House

White House narrows search for anonymous op-ed writer

In his interview with NPR, Woodward also addresses the anonymous op-ed published in The New York Times shortly after the first excerpts of his book were circulating.

Having now read Bob Woodward's Fear, I am struck by the selective and often misleading portrait it paints of the President and his administration.

Woodward has written books about seven prior administrations and gained journalistic fame almost five decades ago as one of the Washington Post reporters whose investigative stories about White House corruption helped drive President Richard Nixon from office.

Kelly is quoted calling Trump "an idiot", and Mattis is quoted saying Trump has the understanding of "a fifth or sixth-grader", but they've said they didn't make those statements.

Woodward replied that these "political statements", denying the quotes in the book, were designed "to protect their jobs".

Woodward staunchly defended his work, saying on NBC's "Today" show that Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and White House chief of staff John Kelly "are not telling the truth" when they deny making disparaging remarks about Trump attributed to them. "I think that's a shame". "People don't want to go into coal mines and get black lung". That makes it harder for readers to assess just what to believe, and it makes it possible for sources to say one thing anonymously and something else for public consumption.

But Woodward says in his book there was an even more unsafe tweet that wasn't sent, declaring that Trump was withdrawing the family members of US troops from South Korea.

Woodward's reporting has been challenged by Cohn, who told Axios: "This book does not accurately portray my experience at the White House". If I did, I would not have been elected president.

Finally, Trump Jr. acknowledged that the Democrats could win back the House during the midterm elections.

The almost unprecedented attack on the President drew a sharp reaction from Trump who termed the op-ed as "treason" and "gutless". Dems can't stand losing.

"You can, in an nearly microscopic way, establish what occurred - and that's what I've done in this book".

"We are in Crazytown", Kelly tells a small group of confidants, according to Woodward. "As you know and are living, we are at a pivot point in history", he said. There have been reports that Trump seems uninterested or unaware of the details of key foreign policy and national security efforts.

The other Trump-related titles that are higher on the list are James Comey's A Higher Loyalty at number five; a Last Week Tonight parody of a Pence family children's book at number two; and Michael Wolff's Fire and Fury in the top spot at number one.
