Woods follows brilliance with even-par Round 2 at BMW Championship

Tiger Woods off to insane start with season on the line

Though he has not won since 2013, Woods missed most of four seasons with a chronic back injury before surgery a year ago alleviated the problem. His best 9-hole score was a 28 in the 2007 Tour Championship, and his 29 on Thursday matched four other instances, most recently at the WGC Mexico in 2006. With a bogey on his penultimate hole, he had an 8-under 62 at Aronimink.

Woods has shot 61 four times on the PGA Tour, most recently at the 2013 Bridgestone Invitational which he won for his 79th career victory on tour, but he is still stuck on that mark.

"I saw some really good signs last week in Boston and I'm continuing to see good signs this week".

McIlroy birdied two holes late on to stay in touch at four adrift and sounded relieved.

It wasn't easy for everyone.

"This was the shot of the entire day, a three-iron from 230 (yards) and I just laced it up in the air", the 42-year-old said.

He added another birdie on the first hole, his 10th of the day, to get to seven-under.

His only bogey came at the par-3 eighth, by far the most hard pin on the course.

A woeful performance on the greens has prompted Tiger Woods to spend considerable time practicing his putting after the second round at the BMW Championship in Philadelphia.

"I hit it just as good and felt like I putted just as good".

The two-time FedEx Cup victor added two more birdies to his card on the back nine, but a costly lip-out bogey on No. 17 and a three-putt on the 18th pushed him back to even par for the day.

Schauffele, who is hoping to beat off competition from the likes of Tony Finau and Kevin Kisner and win Jim Furyk's final wild card on Monday, shot a six-under 64 to lead by two strokes on 13 under par from England's Justin Rose, who shot 63 in an event where he could dethrone Dustin Johnson as world number one by finishing solo second or better.

He missed a 4-foot par putt on the par-3 fifth hole and didn't convert any of the birdie putts from the 20-foot range.

"You don't get many opportunities to break 60 and today was one of them", he said. "I'm not going to say it stings too bad because I'd much rather shoot 62 today and win the golf tournament Sunday than shoot 59 today and maybe not win".
