Passengers sick on Emirates Airline's Dubai-New York flight

The Emirates plane was quarantined after landing at JFK airport on Wednesday morning

The spokeswoman said 10 passengers fell ill on the flight from Dubai to NY.

A plane from Dubai has been quarantined in NY after about 100 passengers, including some crew members, reported unknown illnesses, officials said Wednesday.

The group of illnesses comes a day after 10 people were hospitalized and tested positive for influenza after arriving by plane in NY from Dubai.

Investigators are still working to pinpoint what caused the passengers to fall ill, but their symptoms are consistent with the flu, officials said.

The mayor's office described the response as a quarantine.

Eric Phillips, spokesman for New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, said it appeared that some of the sick passengers had come from Mecca, which was experiencing a flu outbreak.

Vanilla Ice also said via Twitter that "there [were] over 100 people sick on the bottom floor, so happy I'm up top, it's a double-decker plane 380".

Initial reports claimed 100 passengers had fallen ill during the flight from Dubai to NYC, but the airline later told People that only about 10 individuals were affected. According to CBS New York, after the plane arrived at Terminal 4, it was met by the Centers for Disease Control and Port Authority police.

Rap performer Vanilla Ice, who was a passenger on the jet, tweeted, "This is insane".

Medical staff from the CDC had all passengers fill out health care questionnaires on board, passenger Srinivasan Rao said.

Health officials allowed people to disembark only after checking each one for symptoms, Phillips stated, adding, "The plane's been quarantined and the CDC is on the scene". Later, a spokesperson for the Port Authority of NY and New Jersey said the aircraft was not quarantined but was inspected.
