North Korean hacker charged with Sony, WannaCry attacks

In a statement, the Treasury Department also linked Park to the February 2016 cyber-enabled fraudulent transfer of $81 million from Bangladesh Bank and the ransomware used in the May 2017 "WannaCry 2.0" cyber-attack, which encrypted data on Microsoft computers across the world and demanded ransom payments in Bitcoin cryptocurrency.

Park is charged with conspiracy and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

"It's been four years since North Korea's petty little despot hacked Sony Pictures because he didn't like a movie that a free and open society produced".

The FBI said at the time it had recovered evidence connecting North Korea to the attack and others in South Korea.

The U.S. government on Thursday charged and sanctioned a North Korean man in the 2017 global WannaCry ransomware cyberattack and the 2014 cyberassault on Sony Corp (6758.T) (SNE.N), U.S. officials said.

USA prosecutors have charged a North Korean man alleged to have been involved in creating the malicious software used to cripple the UK's National Health Service. "The United States is committed to holding the regime accountable for its cyber-attacks and other crimes and destabilizing activities".

It is unlikely that he will be extradited because the US has no formal relations with North Korea and the North Korean government was not notified about the charges.

Prosecutors said Mr Park was believed to be in North Korea. "Despite efforts to hide his identity and the subjects' efforts to isolate the Chosun Expo Accounts from operational accounts that they used with aliases to carry on their hacking operations", the Federal Bureau of Investigation affidavit states, "there are numerous connections between these sets of accounts".
