Skype Removes Snapchat-Like Highlights Feature, Brings Simpler Design With New Update

Today, Microsoft announced that call recording feature is now available for Skype iOS and Android mobile apps and Skype desktop app. Call recording is completely cloud-based, so the recordings will be available across platforms. That, however, was met with backlash from users who loved the original Skype app too much.

Microsoft-owned telecommunications application software product, Skype, has listened to complaints that features added in the previous year have overcomplicated the product, and has made a decision to strip back and simplify. It allowed users to post a thread of photos and videos for friends to view and react to with emoticons. "As with any feature rich product, maintaining simplicity while enhancing functionality is critical to usability", the team said in a blog post.

Skype's designers are now focusing on the main reasons people use Skype, including making voice and video calls and sending messages.

By removing Highlights and Capture, mobile UI if free to centralise its navigation to three buttons at the bottom, dubbed "Chats, Calls, and Contacts", while notifications sits in the top left.

Calling became harder to execute and "Highlights" didn't resonate with a majority of users. "We needed to take a step back and simplify!" On a side note, call recording is not yet available on Windows 10, but Microsoft said that it will add the feature " in the coming months". The new interface brings back the Skype "Classic" blue theme, and easy Contacts discovery.

The desktop Skype app is also getting a similar redesign that focuses more on simplifying the navigation experience and does away with features that were not used much. You can also select Save as and navigate to the folder where you want it saved.

Microsoft says that layout will be easy for long-time Skype users to understand.

When it announced the June 2017 updates, Microsoft told the BBC: "We know this was a big change and we welcome feedback along the way".
