The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says the tropical storm is centered about 700 miles (1,125 kilometers) west-northwest of the southernmost Cabo Verde Islands.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Monday morning that Tropical Storm Gordon is likely to batter the region with heavy rains. Tropical Storm warnings have been issued from the Alabama-Florida border westward to East of Morgan City, Louisiana.

After making landfall somewhere near Louisiana or Mississippi, Gordon will weaken but continue to move northwest. No impacts from the system are expected for eastern Carolina.

Conditions appear to be conducive for development, and this system is expected to become a tropical depression by Monday morning.

Storm surges from 3 to 5 feet are expected from Shell Beach to the Mississippi-Alabama border, and from 2 to 4 feet from Navarre, Fla., to the Mississippi-Alabama border, and from Shell Beach to the mouth of Mississippi River.

The National Hurricane Center warned of high winds around parts of Florida as the storm passed over the southern tip of the state on Monday morning.

'With the peak of hurricane season upon us, now is the time to get prepared.

A tropical storm warning has been issued for the Gulf Coast from the Florida-Alabama boarder to Louisiana.

Wind gusts from the storm were expected to hit Florida from Monday afternoon, with Governor Rick Scott reminding people to remain vigilant.

But Florence is moving west-northwest at 15 miles per hour and little change is expected in that path before Tuesday.

The storm may gain strength as it crosses the warm waters in the Gulf, Stewart said.

Some areas could also see as much as eight inches of rain, according to the weather service, and flash flooding is possible. This means the remnants of Gordon could move close to the Ark-La-Tex or possibly even into northeastern Texas by late Thursday into Friday.

Tropical Storm Florence is moving quickly west and has strengthened slightly but still poses no threat to land.
