California Lawmakers Pass Net Neutrality Bill

Under new law, bars in LA, Oakland and other Californian cities could serve alcohol until 4 AM

The Democrat-controlled California Senate voted 27-12 to pass the bill, known as SB 822, with just hours left in the legislative session. Scott Wiener, a San Francisco Democrat who introduced Senate Bill 905. Jerry Brown for signature. Net neutrality became a prominent issue nationwide when the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) repealed Obama-era net neutrality laws in late 2017.

Though a small number of clubs in LA and San Francisco can stay open past 2-until 4 or 6 AM-an earlier alcohol curfew compared to cities like Chicago or NY makes profit margins for DJ-oriented club nights thinner, which can sometimes drive promoters into underground spaces. Kevin de Leon is close to being shelved in the state Assembly. President Trump didn't change the internet", said Melissa Melendez, a Republican from Lake Elsinore in Southern California. Governor Brown has not yet indicated whether or not he will sign the bill.

While California would be the first state in the nation to adopt such a measure, other countries, including Norway and Germany, have similar policies.

"These bills share a common goal: to provide more certainty to innovators in California that their use of blockchain is not only permissible but encouraged", Calderon said, indicating the sunset provision will give lawmakers a chance to "evaluate the efficacy of SB 838" and update the definition of blockchain with guidance from the working group.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai was a longtime critic of the federal net neutrality rules.

It passed the Assembly 46-20 August 28 and first passed the Senate in January. They are sponsored by Common Sense Kids Action and have support from the Consumer Federation of America, Electronic Frontier Foundation and Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, among others.

The bill's passage marks the second time in three months that the most populous state has sought to regulate companies on the internet.

"I am incredibly proud of the work we have done to protect Californians everywhere, who deserve equal and open to access to this modern day necessity", Mr. Wiener said in a statement.

"Internet users are still royally pissed off about the FCC's repeal", said Evan Greer, deputy director of Fight for the Future, a consumer advocacy group. "And they're not going to let their elected officials get away with it if they sell out their constituents by siding with big telecom companies".
