Wear OS gets a major re-design

New Wear OS

Along with the addition of smart replies in line with the notification stream, Google Assistant in general is getting beefed up for Wear OS. While the changes are welcome - considering Wear OS hasn't changed much since it was known as Android Wear - some devices won't see the love.

The new UI will be rolling out "over the next month", but that pace may stray depending on device and region.

A new notification feed, still accessed with a swipe up on the screen, shares the same design aesthetics as the Assistant feed and will include smart reply options, making it easy to tap on and send a reply without having to swipe and tap through multiple screens.

Quite a bit different, right?

About the notifications display, Dennis explains that the update is meant to make it "easier to browse, dismiss or take action on your notifications with the new notification stream". This was because even though Google's intention to make its smartwatch OS less platform specific was good, it kind of felt meaningless without any new software or hardware features to improve how Wear OS actually works. The new interface is more user friendly.

"We're evolving the design of Wear OS by Google to help you get the most out of your time - providing quicker access to your information and notifications, more proactive help from the Google Assistant, and smarter health coaching - all with a swipe of your finger", Google said in a blog post. Like before, simply swipe up to see new notifications.

When you want to start a workout or track your progress towards your Move Minutes and Heart Points rings, just swipe left. It ties in with the recent Google Fit announcement. Google Fit has crafted goals based on recommendations from the World Health Organization and the American Heart Association.
