Kalashnikov Debuts CV-1 Electric Vehicle Concept

The retro design of the CV-1 is based on a popular Soviet-era hatchback

The Russian company behind the AK-47 launched a concept electric auto at a Moscow military expo on Thursday - and it claims it can rival Elon Musk's Tesla.

Russia's Kalashnikov is best known for making the legendary AK-47, but the company has just unveiled the CV-1 concept at the Army 2018 International Military Technical Forum in Kubinka. During a recent military expo in Moscow, the company unveiled a fully electric auto that a spokesperson said is created to compete with Tesla.

Kalashnikov constructed the CV-1 on the underpinnings of an Izh 2125 "Kombi," a compact hatchback originally manufactured by the Soviets starting in 1972, with production running until 1997.

No release date has been given as the vehicle remains at the concept stage which becomes obvious by its lack of wing mirrors.

Holding company Kalashnikov Concern said it has developed some cutting-edge elements for the "electric supercar", including a "revolutionary" inverter.

Again, it's not likely you'll see one on American roads any time soon, but it does make Kalashnikov look serious about electric vehicles. The company added that is has added a "revolutionary inverter" in the auto that will allow it to cover about 350km in one single charge.

Russian weapons manufacturer Kalashnikov has unveiled a unique EV concept, the CV-1, that aims to compete with Tesla.

Kalashnikov, a company more known for its AK-47 machine guns than its electric vehicles, unveiled its new electric auto on Thursday.

Kalashnikov has been looking to take its brand in different directions and recently launched a clothing line and a catalogue of personal items ranging from umbrellas to smartphone covers.

The vehicle is only in prototype stages, and pricing or availability details have not been discussed.
