Mobile Security Breach Exposes Personal Information

T-Mobile is notifying some customers about a recent security breach

Data breaches involving cellular providers can be especially risky, according to Dan Guido, CEO of the security firm Trail of Bits, if they make it easier for a criminal to take control of a consumer's phone number by porting it to a new phone.

On August 20, T-Mobile staff detected an unauthorized entry into the company's network.

T-Mobile has announced that on Thursday, it discovered and shut down a brief security breach.

But other information like names, billing zip codes, phone numbers, email addresses, account numbers and account types (postpaid or prepaid) may have been compromised. Customers can also use two-way messaging on MyT-mobile.com or the T-Mobile App to contact customer care.

T-Mobile and division Metro PCS encourages customers with question to reach out to a customer service agent by dialing 611 from their device.

Information on the precise circumstances of the breach is sparse, though T-Mobile's acknowledgment of the event is admirably prompt. Even though no financial info or social security numbers were exposed in this particular breach, details like a person's name, phone number, and email address are still sensitive info. T-Mobile reported 75.62 million customers at the end of Q2 2018. "We truly regret that this incident occurred and are so sorry for any inconvenience this has caused".
