Torrential rains wreak havoc taking 100 lives in Kerala

Heavy rains forced state authorities to release excess water from dozens of reservoirs, causing floods downstream. Dramatic videos showed people stranded atop flooded homes and hills being winched up by Navy choppers.

On Thursday, an emergency meeting was held and it was decided the flood rescue and relief operations would be scaled up in Kerala.

The areas worst hit by the rain are north and central Kerala and Pathanamthitta district, especially Ranni in central Keral has been the worst affected in the last 24 hours as thousands of people were trapped in their homes.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan warned of a grimmer situation as more rain has been forecast till Saturday.

The Supreme Court today termed as "grave" the flood situation in Kerala and agreed to hear a plea seeking Centre's mediation between Kerala and Tamil Nadu governments on the issue of the Mullaperiyar Dam crossing the 142 ft threshold.

Mr Vijayan also said on Twitter that 25 boats with members of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were sent to Pathanamthitta, central Kerala, and all the boats, including fishing boats, would be used to expedite rescue operations in flooded areas. He also asked the Defence Ministry to step up the rescue and relief operations across the state.

"The SCBA, as always, must come forward not only to express its solidarity with the people of Kerala in times of this crisis but must also provide help to bring some relief in mitigating the miseries of millions".

The worst affected have been Idukki and Wayanad districts.

In the main city of Kochi, the global airport was closed until at least Saturday because of flooding.

The global airport at Kochi, a major port city, has also suspended flight operations until tomorrow.

Services on the Kochi Metro were halted for a few hours as water levels rose in the Muttam yard, before resuming in the evening. No rescue team reached yet. According to some reports, around 200 patients were stranded at a hospital in Muvattupuzha after rain water swamped the building.

"This sort of a situation has never been faced by the state. We are doing all that is humanly possible and rescue efforts are going on", Vijayan told a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram, asking people not to panic but take all precautions to keep themselves safe.

Vijayan said the cabinet had chose to form a cabinet sub-committee to look into the quick implementation of the relief and rehabilitation programmes. Hundreds and hundreds of people are stranded, many on the verge of drowning. Hundreds of students were marooned at the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit in Kalady near Kochi.

Cars and livestock washed away in the floods were seen on Indian television, and men and women wading through chest-high waters that had gushed into their homes.

Roads and bridges have caved in and developed cracks in many placesmaking rescue efforts hard.
