Westminster Car Crash Being Treated As Terrorist Incident

Houses of Parliament crash

A video grab taken from AFP TV video footage shows police officers cordoning off Westminster Bridge, leading to Parliament Square in central London on 14 August 2018, after a vehicle was driven into barriers at the Houses of Parliament. He killed four pedestrians and a policeman before he was shot dead.

Khater allegedly crashed a silver Ford Fiesta into cyclists and pedestrians before hitting a concrete barrier outside the Houses of Parliament during rush hour Tuesday morning.

Images showed police holding the man, dressed in jeans and a black puffer jacket, in handcuffs as roads around parliament were sealed off. The police officer who was stabbed also died.

Officers have cordoned the whole square off and are asking the public and press to move away from the scene.

"At this stage, we are treating this as a terrorist incident", the Metropolitan Police said in an emailed statement.

The auto crash that occurred early this morning at the Houses of Parliament is being treated as a potential terrorist incident.

Eyewitness Ewelina U. Ochab said she saw the incident take place from the other side of the pavement.

In 2017, 52-year-old Briton Khalid Masood rammed his auto into pedestrians on the pavement along the south side of the Westminster Bridge, injuring more than 50 people and killing 5.

Barry Williams, a BBC member of staff based at Millbank, said: "I heard lots of screams and turned round". Westminster Tube station is now closed.

"I think it looked intentional - the vehicle drove at speed and towards the barriers".

The man arrested after a auto crashed outside the Houses of Parliament in a suspected terror attack has been named as Salih Khater, a British citizen of Sudanese origin.

She added that the person driving remained in the auto after the accident.

In Tuesday's incident, the auto slammed into barriers that had been extended following the Westminster Bridge attack.

The cordon extends past the Cenotaph on Whitehall - a five-minute walk from the scene at Old Palace Yard.

Westminster station is closed for entry and exit, Transport for London said, and is open only for interchange between lines.

It was the first of five attacks in Britain past year that police designated as terrorism.
