President Trump considers revoking security clearances for former U.S

Asked whether the administration would look into any security clearances for Obama himself or Vice President Joe Biden, Sanders said: "I'm not aware of any plans for that at this point".

The White House revealed Monday afternoon it was not only considering the call of Senator Rand Paul, (R-KY), to take away the security clearance of former CIA Director John Brennan, but also those of 5 other former Hussein Obama Administration critics.

"They've politicized and in some cases monetized their public service and security clearances", Sanders said.

There is a formal process by which clearances can be revoked, Clapper said, but it's predicated on wrongdoing or other set procedures.

"It's kind of a ... petty way of retribution", Clapper told CNN shortly after the announcement adding that he thought the move was in response to speaking out against Trump.

Comey's lawyer, David Kelley, said the ex-FBI director "was read out of his security clearance not long after he left the FBI" in mid-2017, after Trump fired him.

No word yet on when and if Trump will go through with revoking these officials' clearances.

Following the Helsinki summit, where Trump declined to endorse the United States intelligence community's assessment that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election, Brennan harshly condemned Trump's performance at the news conference, calling it "nothing short of treasonous". In the daily briefing, Sarah Sanders said that, yes, he is looking at getting Brennan's clearance revoked.

House Speaker Paul Ryan downplayed President Donald Trump's threat to revoke the security clearances of high-level ex-government officials who have criticized the president.

McCabe's clearance was deactivated when he was sacked from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, said Melissa Schwartz, a spokeswoman for McCabe. Following Trump's meeting last week with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Brennan called Trump's performance "treasonous" and said he "is wholly in the pocket of Putin and that his performance exceeded the threshold for impeachment for 'high crimes and misdemeanors'".

Gen. Hayden told CBS News' Olivia Gazis in an email that he doesn't "go back for classified briefings".

"An enemies list is ugly, undemocratic and un-American", he added. "If he chooses to do it for political reasons, I think that's a bad precedent, and it's a really sad commentary and it's an abuse of the system". Won't have any effect on what I say or write, he said on Twitter.

"It certainly has shadows of some of the worst abuses of the Nixon administration", said Stephen Vladeck, a law professor and national security expert at the University of Texas School of Law who describes himself as a progressive.

"It's frankly more of a courtesy that former senior officials in the intelligence community are extended the courtesy of keeping the security clearance", explained Clapper.

"If we start interjecting politics into this, our country's going to be significantly weakened", Berry said.
