Utah firefighter dies battling Mendocino Complex wildfire in California

California Wildfires: Thoughtful Authorities Help Keep Pet Fish Alive After Homeowners Evacuate

CAL FIRE reports that 147 residences have been destroyed in the two fires and another 1,025 remain threatened.

A firefighter monitors a back fire while battling the Medocino Complex fire on August 7, near Lodoga, Calif. The fire is burning near the Mendocino National Forest, about 140 miles northwest of Sacramento.

About 4,200 fires have charred 726,000 acres (294,000 hectares) in the state so far this year, according to figures from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. It is part of the Mendocino-Complex Fire in Lake, Mendocino and Colusa Counties.

This summer ranks as one of California's worst fire seasons, as numerous blazes burned with extraordinary intensity and speed across the drought-parched state, stoked by erratic winds and record temperatures.

The fire that started on July 13, one month ago Monday is now 83 percent contained.

Not so. A note Cal Fire shared along with the photo of the fish shows that firefighters and area police worked together to make sure the girl came home to the plucky fish named Grant.

While it's not the largest burning in the state, the Holy Fire has raised concerns about effects on residential communities.

Notification of the next of kin is now in progress. The Ranch Fire is 62 percent contained as of Monday morning.

The deadliest wildfire, the Carr Fire, has left a total of eight people dead, including three firefighters.

Per a Cal Fire tweet: "After a father informed his daughter that her fish was likely dead, both were in for quite a shock when they returned home to a well-fed fish! Now we can focus on the challenge of the Ranch Fire", he said. It is 86 percent contained, with full containment expected on Wednesday.

The National Park Service says Yosemite's Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias will reopen to the public on Monday at 9 a.m. and the Yosemite Valley on Tuesday.
