U.S. Sanctions Put Russia on Edge

4 ways Team Trump can make Russia pay

This comes one day after Washington announced it would impose more sanctions on Russia over the United Kingdom nerve agent attack that targeted a former Russian double agent and his daughter.

European countries and the United States expelled 100 Russian diplomats after the attack, in the strongest action by President Donald Trump against Russia since he came to office.

The United States will impose sanctions on Russia for its use of a nerve agent in an attempt to kill a former Russian spy and his daughter in Britain.

Chairman Ed Royce (R-Calif.) wrote to President Trump on July 26 that enforcement of the Chemical and Biological Weapons and Warfare Elimination Act of 1991 in Russia's UK Novichok attack "is critical to deterring additional attacks".

What's more, we can not even say for sure what exactly and how it was used in Britain, since we don't have any information or any response to our proposal for a joint investigation with Britain into this incident, which concerns us greatly.

"Making a linking to these events (the British poisoning) is for us unacceptable and such restrictions like those passed by the American side earlier. are absolutely illegal and do not correspond to global law", said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, according to Reuters.

He said Moscow felt it could now "expect anything at all from Washington" but nevertheless retained "hopes of building constructive relations".

The U.S. move also triggered a sell-off in Russian government bonds and the dollar-denominated RTS index fell to its lowest since April 11.

The new sanctions will take effect on or around 22 August.

Russian Federation is bracing for yet more USA sanctions beyond the ones announced by the State Department on Wednesday.

Such technologies have often been used in items including electronic devices as well as calibration equipment.

Sanctions waivers were in place for certain key sectors, including space flight activities and commercial aviation safety, the official said.

While Kremlin spokesman Peskov suggested the Kremlin was still weighing how to respond to the sanctions, other Russian officials were less circumspect. There will also be some further restrictions on Russian access to USA financial services.

Shares in Russia's main airline Aeroflot plunged by more than 10 percent but later rebounded.

President Trump had already moved to expell a hundred Russian diplomats from the U.S. following the attack. Washington ordered 60 diplomats to leave and closed the Russian consulate general in Seattle.

But Congress has been pushing for such a decision and now the state department has confirmed Russia's actions contravened 1991 U.S. legislation on the use of chemical weapons.

UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt thanked the U.S. on Thursday in a tweet.

This week, Britain's the Guardian newspaper reported London is preparing to ask Moscow to extradite two Russian citizens suspected of carrying out the Salisbury nerve agent attack.

Three months later, Charlie Rowley of Amesbury, England, found a sealed, boxed bottle of perfume and gave it to his girlfriend Dawn Sturgess, who died after spraying the Novichok within on her wrists. Moscow, in turn, responded to the worldwide action by ordering its own expulsion of foreign diplomats.
