Recording of Devin Nunes at private McMorris Rodgers fundraiser makes national headlines

Secret recording reveals why Rosenstein hasn’t been impeached – and when he will be

The recording was obtained and aired by "The Rachel Maddow Show" on MSNBC on Wednesday night.

Nunes, who chairs the House intelligence committee, has been targeted by Democrats as he has expanded the inquiry into Russian meddling in the 2016 election to include the Obama administration's surveillance of the Trump campaign.

"We Republicans excoriated them, called them useful idiots for always apologizing for the Russians and always being part of the blame America first crowd. That's why I keep - and thank you for saying it, by the way - I mean, we have to keep all these seats". They've unearthed some of his crimes, they're looking for more crimes, but you have Devin Nunes bragging about trying to stop the investigation against Putin and Russia's interference in American democracy. We have to keep the majority. But ultimately let's say the Portuguese came and brought her some stolen emails.

Nunes also noted that while he supports impeaching Rosenstein, he knows it would be unpopular, and can't do that until after the election: "I've said publicly Rosenstein deserves to be impeached... the question is the timing of it right before the election".

Democratic lawmakers and pundits quickly condemned the remarks, saying they indicated Nunes was attempting to obstruct justice by suggesting Rosenstein's investigation, headed by special counsel Robert Mueller, should be quashed.

Nunes also said that an effort by some hard-line House Republicans to impeach Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is on hold because of the election and because an impeachment debate would tie up the Senate and prevent it from quickly confirming Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh.

At one point you can hear the Congresswoman chime in when Nunes was responding to a question from the audience about impeaching Rosenstein. Okay, now we have a problem, right?

"Now if somebody thinks that my campaign or Cathy's campaign is colluding with the Chinese, or you name the country, hey, could happen, it would be a very bad thing if Cathy was getting secrets from the Portuguese, let's say, just because I'm Portuguese, my family was", Nunes said, using McMorris Rodgers as an example in his hypothetical. I mean, so, I don't think you're gonna get any argument from most of our colleagues. Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from overseeing the investigation, thus putting Rosenstein in charge. "Well, if that's the case, then that's criminal". If so, that's leaves roughly a month of time before elections for Nunes and Friends to renew Rosenstein impeachment efforts.

This email will be delivered to your inbox once a day in the morning. He added, "so it's not a matter that any of us like Rosenstein. It's a matter of timing".
