Manchester City's Pep Guardiola not fazed by title-favourites tag

Andre Ayew has headed on loan to Fenerbahce

Mourinho recently vented his frustration about his club's lack of summer spending, with Fred the only big-money arrival.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says he is "not confident" of signing another player before Thursday's transfer deadline at 17:00 BST.

"I told that during pre-season it looked like I was saying something absolutely out of order, something insane, I repeat and maybe tomorrow the reaction is the same: Pre-season hard when you don't have your players to work, as simple as that".

Mourinho had warned it would be a "difficult season" if United did not make any more acquisitions and it now looks like his side will miss out.

When asked whether he expected to welcome a fresh additions to his United squad, Mourinho offered these comments: "The information I have is no".

Press Association Sport understands United have been keen to sign a centre-back, but Leicester's reluctance to sell Harry Maguire looks to have scuppered any move for the England star.

I repeat: "pre-season hard when you don't have your players to work, as simple as that".

Having previously managed Barcelona and Bayern Munich, Guardiola is used to high expectations.

Last year, EFL clubs voted to bring the closure of the window in-line with that of Premier League clubs - meaning that the transfer window closed at 5pm on August 9.

"They returned on Monday", he said.

"They trained on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and today, so you can imagine that they're not really fit and ready, but we have needs", said the boss of the quartet.

Marcus Rashford, Phil Jones, Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku made slightly early returns so could be involved on Friday, perhaps helping to boost the mood of a manager who has looked downbeat for much of the summer.

Alisson, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri all arrived before the end of July, with Jurgen Klopp eager to work with his full squad throughout pre-season.

"Is hard for me to understand, to feel, to believe we finish second".

"My view is that, first of all, is hard for me to believe we finished second", he said.

"My view is that first of all it is hard for me to believe we finished second", said Mourinho ahead of his side's Premier League opener against Leicester.
