Former FGCU coach charged for deadly assault in NYC

Jamill Jones right was charged with assault in connection with a deadly attack on tourist Sandor Szabo in New York City

A Wake Forest University assistant basketball coach has been charged in connection with the death of tourist who mistook his SUV for an Uber.

Jamill Jones has turned himself into New York City Police.

According to a law enforcement official, it appeared Szabo was trying to flag down a ride after leaving a relative's wedding early Sunday when he came across Jones, who was in a white SUV. Dominic also told the paper that his brother probably thought the vehicle was an Uber.

According to Jones' biography page on the Wake Forest website, he coached college basketball at Central Florida, Florida Gulf Coast and Virginia Commonwealth before coming to Wake Forest.

Szabo's cause of death has not been released, but on Friday it was deemed a homicide, according to police. Massena said the encounter between Jones and Szabo was "a tragic accident and we will deal with it in the courts". Authorities said that Jamill Jones punched Sandor Szabo on a Queens street, causing Szabo to fall and hit his head on the sidewalk, after which Jones left the scene.

The assistant coach allegedly punched Sabor Szabo in the face at 1:15 a.m. ET on Sunday morning after a confrontation.

"The Jones family sends their deepest condolences and sympathies to the Szabo family".

A spokesman said Wake Forest had no immediate comment on the 35-year-old Jones' arrest.

Szabo, also 35, was "super outgoing, friendly, and an incredibly smart businessman", said his company, at What If Media Group, based in Fort Lee, New Jersey. "He was a really good person". He was kind, giving, loving and enjoyed life to the fullest. We're going to say one thing and that's all.

A former VCU assistant basketball coach has been charged in the death of a man in NY last weekend.
