Woman fined $210 for wearing burqa in Denmark under new law

Denmark enforces burqa ban amid protests

Police arrived on the scene and reviewed CCTV footage of what happened, before telling the woman that she would be fined 1,000 kroner (£119.37) in the post. She opted to leave. "This ban will have a particularly negative impact on Muslim women who choose to wear the niqab or burqa", said Gauri van Gulik, Amnesty International's Europe director, upon the ban's passage.

He stressed that the assault had nothing to do with the niqab.

Police said both women were charged with violating the peace and said one had also been charged with violating the full-face veil law.

Mr Borcher said: 'We don't start taking the niqab or burka ban off people.

The episode took place in the center of Hørsholm center where the woman with niqab came up to top with another woman by an escalator in the center. She chose the latter'.

Veiled women take part in a demonstration against the veil ban.

Police are going through surveillance video to determine if the other woman deliberately ripped off the niqab.

Since 1 August, Denmark's much-debated burka ban has provoked protests and criticism from human rights groups.

The law itself does not mention burkas or niqabs by name, instead stating that "anyone who wears a garment that hides the face in public will be punished with a fine". They face fines of 1,000 Danish krone (£120) for a first offence, to 10,000 krone for a...

If offenders refuse to pay the fine they can be taken to court.

Supporters of the law, meanwhile, claim the law will better integrate Muslims into Danish society.

The Danish parliament enacted the face ban in May, joining France and some other European countries to uphold what some politicians say are secular and democratic values.
