Five people were killed Sunday afternoon after a Cessna 414 departing Santa Ana, California's Orange County Airport crashed into the parking lot of a nearby mall.

KTLA reported that the twin-engine aircraft went down near South Coast Plaza and the crash happened in the parking lot of a Staples store.

It was not clear if any people on the ground were injured in the incident.

The plane was registered to a San Francisco Real Estate Company.

The Orange County Fire Authority, who responded on the scene, said they were lucky the crash wasn't as deadly as it could have been.

The plane was heading to the airport southeast of Los Angeles when it came down and struck an unoccupied parked vehicle in the lot of a Staples store and a CVS pharmacy, said Orange County Fire Authority Captain Steve Concialdi.

"We looked up to see the plane falling nose first", she told the Times.

The plane went down in a parking lot just outside a Staples business supply store about 1½ miles from the airport.

The harrowing final moments of a small plane that plummeted to the ground Sunday were captured on a dashcam video, as family members have identified one of the five victims in the tragedy. The agency will investigate and the National Transportation Safety Board will determine the cause of the accident, the FAA said in a tweet.

Four unoccupied parked cars were struck in the crash, with one suffering major damage, Fire Capt.
