Paul Manafort’s Accountant Testifies She Helped Alter Financial Documents

Paul Manafort

She admitted helping Manafort and his business partner's request to backdate documents and falsify financial records to reduce his tax burden and help him qualify for loans. Though this case is not about Russian Federation or possible election conspiracy, it has captured Trump's attention. A second trial is scheduled for September in the District of Columbia. The president's son has insisted he never told his father about the sit-down but Michael Cohen, Trump's former longtime lawyer now under federal investigation, is reportedly ready to testify that Trump knew about it ahead of time.

Recall that according to USA investigators, a former lobbyist of the Party of regions by Paul Manafort earned more than $60 million as a political consultant in Ukraine. If the jury agrees, Manafort, 69, could spend the rest of his life in prison.

With offhand remarks, aggressive pushback and a need for speed, Judge Ellis has become a character in this trial himself.

Laporta's testimony was part of a high-stakes criminal trial against Manafort after prosecutors working for the special counsel Robert Mueller charged him with tax and bank fraud, conspiracy, failure to register as a foreign agent, and obstruction of justice. But Ayliff was unaware of any deception by Gates, he said.

"He is completely outraged by the way Manafort has been treated, with the solitary confinement and all of that", Trump's attorney Rudy Giuliani told The Post. "The defense will go after him with a vengeance".

Prosecutors say Manafort was flush with cash from his political consulting work for the pro-Russia leader of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych, but when Yanukovych was ousted in 2014, that money dried up and Manafort needed loans to keep up his expensive lifestyle.

Between 2010 and 2014, Manafort spent $929,000 on suits at the store. Prosecutors say the documents inflated the net income of his business by roughly $4 million, and they say he tried to pass them off as coming from her accounting firm. His testimony, given in short, clipped answers as Manafort rarely broke his gaze from the witness stand, follows that of vendors who detailed Manafort's luxurious spending and financial professionals who told jurors how the defendant hid millions of dollars in offshore accounts. Assistant U.S. Attorney Uzo Asonye asked Laporta on Friday afternoon.

"Judge, this is not an effort to prove Mr. Manafort lived lavishly", Andres said. Even when Gates met with prosecutors in February to try to win a plea deal, he lied.

And those were just Gates's lies to the government.

"You believed it was false?"

Jurors have now heard testimony that he never told his tax accountants about offshore bank accounts containing millions of dollars.

Ms. LaPorta's testimony is likely a blow to defense attorneys' claim that Mr. Gates was the one responsible for the bank and tax fraud.

Prosecutors confirmed today that they have "every intention" of calling former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort's longtime right-hand man Rick Gates to testify in the trial that, per the reputation of this Beltway "rocket docket", is moving at a fast clip. When Laporta and a colleague provided an assessment of Manafort's tax liability, Gates responded that Manafort couldn't afford to pay it.

Gates is expected to be a star witness in the government's case because of his long association with Manafort. But that strategy was undercut a few times, as witnesses insisted Manafort was clearly in charge and aware of what they were doing.

Washkuhn, who handled Manafort's finances from 2011 to 2018, testified that as Manafort's lobbying work in Ukraine slowed down, he began to fall behind on payments - including money he owed to her - in 2016.

He also chastised defense lawyer Thomas Zehnle as he described Manafort's contributions to politics.

Gates said an associate, Konstantin Kilimnik, had control over the overseas accounts. Earlier this year, he pleaded guilty to financial charges and lying to federal investigators, and agreed to cooperate with Mueller's investigators. Now, the two will battle each other in court.
