Child pulled from Tampa river dies, woman in custody

Police said a 4-year-old girl died after her mother threw her into a Florida river

A woman has been charged with murder after police say she tossed her 4-year-old daughter into a Florida river.

Multiple witnesses had called police about 30 minutes earlier and had reported seeing a woman throw the girl into the river. Je'Hyrah was pronounced dead at a hospital.

According to police, witnesses say they observed her forcefully pushing a child into the backseat of the vehicle.

Police believe the child to be the 4-year-old daughter of the woman, whom officers arrested near the scene.

Denson is accused of stealing a car from an auto fix shop, then parking the vehicle on North Rome Avenue, police said.

Shakayla Denson, 26, is charged with first-degree felony murder, aggravated child abuse, and grand theft auto. "It's the craziness of the world we live in at this time".

Witnesses say Denson grabbed Je'Hyrah with both arms and pulled her close to her chest as the mother waded deeper into the water, according to authorities.

"My daughter was recently diagnose with autism spectrum, my goal is to start saving for therapy equipment, and also for je'hyrah's future".

It was not known if Je'Hyrah was dead before she was thrown into the water.

She is said to have been carrying the Christian holy book and wearing a bra, with her legs reportedly covered in grass or seaweed.

"They were fully clothed which was the other very odd thing to me". They were by themselves in the river so I don't know why I took a picture.

A witness was quoted by TampaBay.com as saying that Denson forcefully removed the child from the vehicle. The report adds that the little girl was discovered unconscious about 75 feet offshore.

In 2015, police say a man threw his 5-year-old daughter to her death off the Skyway Bridge in St. Petersburg.
