Athletes react to Donald Trump insulting LeBron James

Donald Trump attacks LeBron James in late-night tweet

"What I've noticed over the last few months is he's kind of used sport to divide us".

"He's doing an awesome job for his community", Jordan, now owner of the National Basketball Association's Charlotte Hornets, told NBC News through a spokesperson.

The first lady praised James for his work with children, even saying she is open to visiting the school for underprivileged children he founded in his hometown of Akron, Ohio.

LeBron James was interviewed by CNN's Don Lemon on Monday, and that interview re-aired Friday night, per CNN.

Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for First Lady Melania Trump Saturday said it appears James is "working to do good things" and that she would be willing to visit the new school he opened in Ohio.

"I like Mike!" Trump added, seemingly referencing basketball legend Michael Jordan, with whom James is often compared.

First lady Melania Trump seems to have a different opinion than the president when it comes to Los Angeles Laker LeBron James. "I can't sit back and not say nothing", James said of Trump's actions.

Jordan expressed his support for James on Saturday.

The school, which is a joint effort of the LeBron James Family Foundation and Akron Public Schools, will benefit at-risk children.

Other athletes besides Jordan, along with celebrities and journalists, have come to James' defense. "He made Lebron look smart, which isn't easy to do", Trump said on Twitter shortly before midnight on Friday, twice misspelling the four-time NBA Most Valuable Player's name. "I would never sit across from him", James quickly replied.

He was responding to remarks by then-Cavs star James and Curry, who both said they would not attend a White House reception.

The four-time NBA MVP, 33, branded the USA leader " a bum" after he rescinded an invitation for NBA champions the Golden State Warriors to visit the White House a year ago, amid doubts over whether some players - including star man Stephen Curry - would attend.

James described Trump as a "bum" following the furor.

He accused Trump, who said National Football League players who kneel during the anthem should be fined, of trying to use sport to divide people. But the attack on James, who was being interviewed by another black man, to some resembled a racial dog whistle.
