DR Congo declares 4 new Ebola outbreak in eastern province

Congo confirms 4 Ebola cases week after outbreak ends

At least 20 people have died after showing symptoms of haemorrhagic fever in and around the village of Mangina, the Congolese health ministry said.

"These cases are also a reminder - an unnecessary reminder - of the high vulnerability of communities in DRC".

Tedros said: "Ebola is a constant threat in the DRC; what adds to our confidence in the country's ability to respond is the transparency they have displayed once again".

Authorities have warned that the new outbreak, declared a week after another Ebola outbreak in Congo's northwest was declared over, poses a "highly complex" challenge with multiple armed groups active in the mineral-rich region and with Beni and a well-traveled border with Uganda and Rwanda nearby. This could include redeploying personnel involved in the Ebola response in Equateur Province, as well as the deployment of new experts if necessary.

The majority of the cases are in the Mangina health area which is 30 kilometres from the city of Beni.

An global delegation has arrived in the town of Beni in Democratic Republic of Congo, 30 km (18 miles) from where an Ebola outbreak was declared, the World Health Organisation and Congolese officials said on Thursday.

This is the central African country's 10th outbreak since 1976, when the virus was discovered near the eponymous river in the north. The National Institute of Biomedical Research in Kinshasa confirmed that samples from four hospitalized patients tested positive for Ebola. "It is, on the other hand, worrying that this area is a conflict zone.It is an area with lots of displacement, so the access can be hampered in that way". Fortunately, equipment and responders to the earlier outbreak are still in DRC.

The two outbreaks are separated by more than 2,500 kilometers (1,553 miles).

Ebola is a virus-caused haemorrhagic fever with a high fatality rate and in extreme cases causes bleeding from internal organs, the mouth, eyes or ears. "This outbreak comes at a time when the country is already unstable, with millions of people caught up in humanitarian crises as a result of ongoing conflicts".
