LeBron James Opens Public School For "At-Risk" Kids In Akron, OH

LeBron James reveals why he joined Lakers in free agency

From the moment LeBron James made it known that he would be joining the Lakers, he has taken a low-key approach to this move.

Los Angeles Lakers' LeBron James might have gone Hollywood but that doesn't mean he forgot about his hometown.

This was something a fair bit bigger than basketball.

For James, who recalled missing 82 days of school as a fourth grader while he and his mom "looked for stability", the opening culminated years of planning by his family foundation. Each of the 240 students at the I Promise School will receive a Huffy bicycle and helmet.

The successful establishment of the school follows LeBron's childhood story of having to miss several school days until 1993 when he was taken in by the Walker family who made sure that he made ideal attendance to school in a city school in Akron.

"Looking at reading data, we identified students who were a year, two years behind in reading", said Keith Liechty, the Akron Public Schools" liaison to James' foundation.

"LeBron went to a public school", Keith Liechty-Clifford, the co-ordinator of school improvement for Akron Public Schools, told the L.A. Times. He started off with a moving speech about how connected he feels to Akron, and why he chose to focus on opening a school to begin with. It was the community that helped him and his mother, Gloria, it was teachers, it was administrators.

"So we look forward to all the challenges".

LeBron James'new school is much more than a school.

"We want every kid that walks through this school to be inspired, to come ... away with something, something where they can give back", James said. "From that, we had more than 120 kids". And I was one of those kids so I know exactly what those kids today are going through being a part of this. I went through the same emotions. "For kids, in general, all they want to know is that someone cares". The school will also feature job placement assistance for parents and a on-site food bank for families. And now, being able to partner with Magic Johnson - someone I kind of looked up to when I was younger.

James recalled beating the odds of his youth when life was a daily struggle for him and his mom.
