Andy Murray beats Mackenzie McDonald in Washington Open

ATP Washington- MAIN DRAW Alexander Zverev and Andy Murray to play

Skipping Wimbledon in order to give himself more time to be match ready for best of 5 sets might pay off handsomely.

McDonald deserved the opening set by breaking Murray in two of his three service games and Murray was still searching for that match sharpness, a stronger second serve and the length of his ground-strokes was troubling him at times.

"I fought hard and I had to", Murray said.

"Without a shot clock, that would have been a three-hour match", Murray said.

"I'll have to play much better if I want to win that match, more aggressively", Murray said.

"If I am out here losing first round every single week, I am not going to enjoy that as much", he said.

Murray has been drawn to face American Mackenzie McDonald in the first round as he steps up his recovery from hip surgery.

The match began after 10 p.m. Monday because of a rain delay and ended at about 12:45 a.m. Tuesday. "Maybe tennis could do a better job of being a bit more transparent with that and kind of showing exactly how many tests everyone has had".

Murray returned last month with a loss to Australia's Nick Kyrgios at Queens, then beat Stan Wawrinka and lost to Edmund at Eastbourne - all on grass.

He took six of seven games in one stretch and was actually one point from serving for the victory, holding a break point while already ahead by a set and 4-3 in the second. The world number 198 had a first-round match against USA qualifier Donald Young rained out.

But Murray immediately broke back - in a game that included a controversial call when McDonald's racket was adjudged to have crossed the plane of the net with the score 30-30 - before serving out to reach the second round.

In other matches, Noah Rubin got past Mikhail Youzhny 6-4 6-4; Tim Smyczek beat Ricardas Berankis 7-6 (7-4) 6-2, and Malek Jaziri defeated Evgeny Donskoy 6-4 6-1.

In addition to Murray, notable men's field entrants so far include 17-time Grand Slam victor and defending China Open champion Rafael Nadal, 2009 US Open victor Juan Martin del Potro and world number three, rising star Alexander Zverev.

He is scheduled to play American Mackenzie McDonald on Monday evening, with the match marking his return to the hard courts for the first time since March 2017.
