Nationwide smoking ban goes into effect for residents in public housing

NYC public housing buildings are now smoke-free

Smokers residing in public housing won't be able to spark a cigarette in or near their premise starting July 31. It doesn't, however, govern any of the other mixed-income housing properties that FWHS owns.

A nationwide ban on smoking in public housing facilities took effect at the end of July, almost two years after the rule was passed.

"Smoking actually damages the units, whether it's the paint or the cabinets", he said.

All lit tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars, and pipes in all public housing living units, common areas, and offices are banned under the rule.

They are also not allowed to light up within 25 feet of public housing buildings.

"It's kind of controlling a little bit". The nationwide ban on smoking in public housing was implemented almost two years after the rule was passed by the Obama administration in 2016.

"Residents have been required to sign new leases acknowledging the new policy and staff will continue to provide smoking cessation program information to residents as requested", Lemons said.

"I'm an adult and I feel like I am being treated like a child when you tell me I can't smoke if I choose to smoke", West said.

"If they have kids they'll understand what's going on, like if they put the kids into consideration, it might stop", B.G. Jojo said.

People who don't follow the rules could possibly be evicted.
