Judge blocks release of 3D printed gun blueprints

Nine states are suing the Trump administration to stop 3D-printed guns

The suit, being filed Monday in Seattle, asks a judge to block the federal government's late-June settlement with Defense Distributed, which allowed the company to make the plans available online.

"There is a possibility of irreparable harm because of the way these guns can be made", he said. Separately, attorneys general in 21 states urged Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Monday to withdraw from the settlement with Defence Distributed, saying it "creates an imminent risk to public safety". During a news conference at the Capitol, the lawmakers described it as a "deadly mistake" and a "self-inflicted public safety crisis".

Blueprints for 3D-printed guns, published online four days early amid last-minute attempts to ban them, have been downloaded thousands of times.

The plans were cleared for publishing beginning August 1. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Ed Markey of MA and Robert Menendez of New Jersey.

President Donald Trump said Tuesday he was "looking into" 3D printed plastic guns.

The Democrats - as well as members of Everytown's Veterans Advisory Council - argued the plastic guns would be untraceable, hard to detect in metal detectors and require no background check. Sen.

A USA gun rights advocate began gearing up for a legal fight Wednesday to be able to publish online blueprints for 3D-printed firearms, as the White House signaled support for a federal judge's decision to block the venture.

The problem with all of this is that designs for 3-D printable guns have been online since 2013 at other sites and are still available now.

The Firearms Policy Coalition, however, slammed the restraining order.

Gun control advocates welcomed the federal court's temporary restraining order against Defense Distribution.

Gun access advocacy group Defense Distributed was due to put downloadable gun blueprints online on Wednesday. By Sunday 1,000 people had downloaded 3D printer plans for the AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.

Throughout the day several Democratic lawmakers criticized President Trump and the administration for capitulating to Wilson, despite previous legal victories.

The president seemed to express surprise.

"All you need is a little money and you can download a blueprint from the Internet to make a gun at home, " said Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer.

Twenty-six percent of Republicans said the practice should be legal, while only 14 percent of Democrats agreed.

He added that the administration "will continue to look at all options available to us to do what is necessary to protect Americans while also supporting the First and Second amendments".

During his 18-month presidency, which has seen a fresh wave of mass shootings at schools and public places, Trump has occasionally seemed to favor tougher gun regulations, before buckling under pressure from his base and donors.

The NRA said in a statement that "antigun politicians" and some members of the news media wrongly claim that 3-D printing technology "will allow for the production and widespread proliferation of undetectable plastic firearms".

A 1988 federal law - drafted with NRA support - barred the manufacture, sale or possession of an undetectable firearm.
