Aeromexico plane with 101 people on board crashes in Mexico, 85 injured

Reports of an Aero Mexico jet crash near Durango Mexico

José R. Aispuro Torres, governor of Durango state, said strong wind currents likely brought down the flight.

Flores said that paramedics took about 20 minutes to get to the crash site.

Alejandro Cardoza, a spokesman for the state's civil protection agency, said in an interview that around 85 people had suffered mostly light injuries and that the fire had been put out.

According to Gov. Jose Aispuro, a gust of wind hit the jet - which was headed from Mexico's northern state of Durango to Mexico City - causing it to lose speed and hit the ground with its left wing, knocking both engines loose. The Aeromexico aircraft, originally purchased and used by two USA airlines, was ten years old.

Images from the scene show flames and a column of smoke rising from an aircraft on the ground among bushes and tall grass. "The most seriously injured is the pilot", Solano Mejia said. Aispiro said the plane crash-landed into a grassy field and skidded horizontally, which allowed emergency slides to be deployed before the aircraft caught on fire.

"The plane was taking off", said Rosas Aispuro, adding that witnesses told him there was "a bang" and then without warning the plane was on the ground.

Herrera said the skies were sunny as passengers boarded the flight from Durango to Mexico City Tuesday afternoon and the violent storm seemed to come from nowhere.

Sanchez, who suffered multiple fractures to his arm, was placed on an ambulance with a girl who suffered burns on her legs, he said.

In 2016, everyone escaped after an engine explosion during takeoff caused a fire that severely damaged an American Airlines plane at Chicago's O'Hare Airport.

He said Mexican officials would lead the investigation. "What we do know so far is that the plane was trying to take off in really bad weather".

The airline's CEO said the Embraer 190 jet was 10 years old, "perfectly maintained", and was last serviced in February.

Local media outlets reported that passengers were seen walking to a nearby road for help.

Aeromexico wrote on Twitter Wednesday just after 5 p.m. ET that it was aware of an "accident" in the northwest Mexican state of Durango.

Another survivor tweeted that it was the "scariest moment of my life. never thought this would happen to me".

Rómulo Campuzano, a National Action Party (PAN) politician, said he had been "very lucky because I was able to get out by the main door" using a torn-off door as a ramp to safety. "I vow that the crew and all passengers are well", he wrote.

Mechanical failure and human error could be factors, but certainly the weather was not favourable. The aircraft, serial number 190-173, was delivered in May 2008, the company said in a statement.
