Trump offers to meet leaders of Iran with ‘no preconditions’

Rouhani attends a news conference at the Chancellery in Vienna Austria

Trump touted the concept of "speaking to other people, especially when you're talking about potentials of war and death and starvation and lots of other things - you meet, there's nothing wrong with meeting". "There's nothing wrong in meeting".

Such a meeting would be the first between USA and Iranian leaders since before the 1979 Iranian revolution. Unless Washington is ready to rethink its arms sales to its Arab allies - and Trump clearly wants to sell them more weapons - it should have no expectations that Iran will cut back its missile program. So lastly, even if they were to meet, why would Rouhani want to negotiate a new nuclear deal with the U.S. given that the Americans have turned their back on an already existing deal?

Many Iranians find it hard to believe that the man who is trying to destroy their economy, and has banned them from flying to the United States, can be trusted. "No preconditions. If they want to meet, I'll meet".

Asked if he had any preconditions for such a meeting, Trump replied: "No preconditions".

A meeting between l Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Donald Trump could be on the cards.

Responding to Trump's offer, Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the United States should blame itself for leaving the negotiating table by unilaterally scrapping the 2015 nuclear deal - officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Hamid Aboutalebi, an adviser to Rouhani, tweeted on Monday, calling for the U.S.to respect Iran and return to the original nuclear deal.

Trump said at the start of his meeting with Conte that the country's new populist government "has taken a very firm stance on the border".

"If Trump hadn't quit the JCPOA and not reimposed sanctions, I think it would have been OK to enter talks with America", Ali Motahari said on Tuesday.

President Trump has hinted he would be open to a meeting with Iran with "no preconditions" just months after withdrawing from the Iran Nuclear Deal. Since then, Tehran's clerical establishment has been under increasing USA pressure and the prospect of renewed sanctions.

Earlier Monday, Trump endorsed Italy's handling of immigration issues as he welcomed the country's new premier to the White House for talks on trade and the military.

"He must first return to the nuclear deal and implement it before negotiating can even be contemplated", said analyst Mohammad Marandi, of the University of Tehran, who was part of the nuclear negotiating team.

And on July 23, Trump warned Iran of serious consequences "few had ever suffered in history" if it made threats against the United States. Trump said the deal helped Iran more than it helped other countries.

"It's tricky for them" Blanc told VOA.

Iran's foreign ministry responded, mocking Trump for not taking a more "civilized" tone.

The global nuclear agreement forced Iran to curtail its uranium enrichment capacity to prevent it from developing nuclear weapons, and imposed stringent verification processes, in exchange for relief on crippling sanctions.

"He wants to put himself in the room", he said.

Interested in Donald Trump?

Secretary Pompeo and National Security Advisor John Bolton, in contrast, seem more interested in forcing Iran to capitulate. "That dialogue was based on the idea of confidence-building measures and the nuclear deal was an achievement of this effort and it must be accepted".

Second, there is reason to believe the Iranian regime is reeling.
