Sebastian Vettel doesn't blame Valtteri Bottas for Hungary collision

Toto Wolff has defended Lewis Hamilton over his comments

Mercedes driver Hamilton, fresh from a dominant victory that was far less nervy than expected before the race, was likening the 24-point championship lead he is taking into the summer break to a "dream".

But Vettel avoided picking up a puncture, allowing him to take second behind race victor and championship leader Lewis Hamilton, while Bottas finished fifth.

Kimi Raikkonen finished third, his fifth podium finish in a row, in the second Ferrari ahead of Daniel Ricciardo who surged from 12th on the grid to fourth for Red Bull ahead of Bottas, who finished fifth after a late pit stop.

Hamilton's victory was a near-perfect send-off for him and Mercedes as the F1 circus set off for a four-week closedown that will end when the teams return to action in Belgium at the end of August.

Hamilton in lead doesn't mean that he has significant immunity in the championship race.

However a couple of hours after the race, Bottas went on Twitter to diffuse the situation, "I have not called a meeting with the bosses for Toto saying I was the ideal wingman in this race". But then the rear tyres started to die. But Ricciardo was able to eventually catch up and pass Bottas for fourth place on the final lap. Vettel was now only a couple of second off Bottas and only passed the Finn when the latter chose to pit on Lap 15, a lap after Raikkonen. It looked like Ferrari and Mercedes are neck and neck.

It marked Hamilton's second win in just eight days following his remarkable triumph in the rain at Hockenheim, and another blow to Vettel who has lost 32 points to his rival in just two races. "I think that boost will last a long time for our team and it's encouraging for everyone so I'm excited for the break".

At lap 22, Hamilton and Vettel were still leading, followed by Bottas and Raikonnen.

Vettel was now in the lead and the plan was to pit, rejoin still ahead of Bottas, and attack Hamilton from a deficit of about 10 seconds with about 30 laps to go. In Baku he lost places, too aggressive on the restart, in France he clipped Valtteri Bottas in turn one and then went off into the barriers in the wet in Germany. "But we've got to continue to keep rising with all the other elements, which allows us to beat the Ferraris when they don't bring their A game". Vettel will certainly be hoping so.

"And he would have said the same about Lewis if he'd be in same situation and had a similar race".

"This year we all know that Ferrari really do have the upper hand pace-wise", Hamilton admitted.

We are on equal terms and I trust the team 100% on that. "But that is part of racing".

"Last year we lost the championship in the second half of the year because our auto wasn't quick enough, but I am quite confident that we can improve", a spirited Vettel said.

"It doesn't really feel like a very happy finish, but as a team we scored decent points".

"I think we could have the catching bit but not really the overtake".
