Mars to appear very bright in tonight's sky

Hubble сделал снимки Сатурна и Марса

While it will still be a distant 35.8 million miles away from us, you can easily spot it with your naked eye in the southern sky after sunset.

Even though some water may have been discovered there, Mars has less than 1% of the atmospheric pressure of that on Earth.

The distance between Earth and Mars changes throughout the year due to their elliptical shaped paths.

Stunning pictures of Mars and Saturn taken as the two planets were making their closest approach to Earth this year have been released.

Mars comes at opposition at an average interval of two years and two months when the planet comes close to the Earth and becomes brighter, the Ministry of Earth Science said in a statement.

For about two months between July 7 and September 7, Mars will glow even brighter, outshining Jupiter and earning the title of the fourth-brightest object in Earth's sky after Venus, the moon, and the sun.

Mars will shine brightly and will appear to bigger than normal on Tuesday. Because there is a giant dust storm that has been circling the entire planet!

There is presently a planet-wide dust storm on Mars, a phenomenon that is said to occur when the planet is closest to the sun in its orbit. That was the closest in 60,000 years, and that kind of range won't happen again until the year 2287.

The Red Planet peaked in its orbit around 12.45am PT on Monday morning, or before sunrise on the East Coast. However, the visibilty won't be too bad from other parts of the world. Saturn will also be visible, as shown in the map below.

The Griffith live stream was accompanied by the Observatory's astronomy experts who were on hand to guide the viewers through the event.

Early this morning, Mars made its closest approach to Earth since 2003 - but if you missed it, the Red Planet is still a magnificent sight to see in the night sky.

The closest approach on Tuesday will make Mars brightest since 2003.

NASA and its partners are holding a $2.5 million competition to build a 3D printed habitat for deep space exploration, including the agency's journey to Mars.
