3D-printed gun blueprints blocked by U.S. judge

States sue to block sale of 3D-printed weapon designs online

U.S. District Judge Robert Lasnik in Seattle said the blueprints' publication could cause irreparable harm to U.S. citizens.

'These downloadable guns are unregistered and very hard to detect, even with metal detectors, and will be available to anyone regardless of age, mental health or criminal history'. The Trump administration reversed course, agreeing to allow Defense Distributed to publish the tutorials online. "He granted that relief", Ferguson said at a news conference after the hearing.

Eight Democratic attorneys general filed a lawsuit to block the public from getting their hands on the blueprints, arguing unregistered weapons produced by high-tech printers pose a serious safety risk.

The states sought a restraining order and an injunction to block the gun info from being posted on the internet.

In the meantime, congressional Democrats have urged Donald Trump to reverse the decision to let Defense Distributed publish the plans.

"I am looking into 3-D Plastic Guns being sold to the public", he tweeted.

The Texas company, Defense Distributed, was to release the blueprints on Wednesday after reaching a settlement with the federal government in June. Those plans were put on hold by the Seattle judge's decision.

Two bills are set to be introduced in Congress today that would somehow prohibit the use or manufacture of the guns. A lawyer for the company said he didn't know how many blueprints had been downloaded since then.

The election-year headache is a problem of the administration's own making.

Speaking to CNN's "New Day" shortly before Trump's tweet, Fred Guttenberg, whose daughter was killed in the Parkland, Florida, high school shooting in February, said the ability to download blueprints for the firearms doesn't make sense. Wilson said he would make the plans available August 1 - the day, his website said, when "the age of the downloadable gun formally begins".

NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch argued that the backlash has erupted merely because of Trump administration involvement.

Some Republicans also expressed concern.

Kenneth Schwartz reported this story for VOA News.

"These 3D-printed plastic firearms can evade our detection systems and are a direct threat to our national security", Nelson said.

NRA spokesman Dana Loesch has said trying to outlaw the guns, or the technology that produces them, would be "absolutely unenforcable".

A 1988 federal law - drafted with NRA support - barred the manufacture, sale or possession of an undetectable firearm.

Officials say that 1,000 people have already downloaded the directions for plastic guns.

But he's concerned about drug cartels or terrorists groups who could afford to invest in the expensive printers in order to create untraceable weapons that would thwart metal detectors. 3D printers turn digital files into three-dimensional objects by successively laying down thin layers of plastic until the object is created.

These are the things that at least 21 USA attorneys general are concerned about, and why nine of them chose to file suit against the U.S. government.

With more than 4,500 downloads as of Tuesday afternoon, the most popular blueprint on the site appeared to be for "the Liberator", a single-shot.380-caliber handgun made nearly entirely of 3D-printed plastic.
