Investigators can't rule out 'interference' in loss of MH370

However, investigators say they are confident the aircraft was deliberately flown off course and into the Indian Ocean.

Family members speak to the media after an MH370 closed door meeting in Putrajaya, Malaysia July 30, 2018.

On May 29, Malaysia called off a three-month search by United States firm Ocean Infinity, which spanned 112,000 sq km (43,243 sq miles) in the southern Indian Ocean and ended with no significant findings.

It was the second major search after Australia, China and Malaysia ended a fruitless $193 million Cdn search across an area of 120,000 sq km previous year.

Malaysian and global investigators have been looking into why the Boeing 777 jet veered thousands of miles off course from its scheduled route before eventually plunging into the Indian Ocean.

It was carrying 239 people.

Subsequently, the police's forensic report on a flight simulator seized from Zaharie's home concluded that there were no unusual activities other than game-related flight simulations.

Kok said the team looked into the pilot and first officer's background.

"And at the end of the day the big questions remain and so that is no end in sight for the families as I see it because we still don't know what happened, why it happened, who or what was responsible and so we are exactly where we were on 8th of March which is that there was a plane that took off and turned back and disappeared, and all that we can confirm at the end of four and a half years or so is that the plane disappeared", he said.

Earlier today, the Malaysian International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Investigation Team for MH370 concluded that it is unable to determine the real cause of the aircraft's disappearance four years ago.

It did address one of the pervasive theories about the disappearance: that the plane may have been crashed on goal by a suicidal pilot.

Kok said they looked into each theory and rumour raised on social media.

It's hard to attribute the change in course to any system failure, according to the report released Monday.

She said the scope of the safety investigation was also too limited, depended too much on information supplied to them by other parties rather than on their own probe, and didn't discuss the scope of the searches.

The report also ruled out any mechanical anomalies with the plane, together with any possibility that the pilot was incompetent or suffering from mental issues. No irregularities were found in the onboard cargo either.

The only confirmed traces of the aircraft have been three wing fragments washed up along Indian Ocean coasts.

Malaysia's newly elected prime minister Mahathir Mohamad has said Malaysia would consider resuming the search only if new clues come to light.

The report also highlighted lapses by Kuala Lumpur Air Traffic Control (KLATC), saying they "did not comply with established procedures".

The Malaysian government's chief investigator into the disappearance of the Boeing 777 is releasing his findings in Kuala Lumpur now.

The next-of-kin of the passengers were briefed on the final report by investigators earlier on Monday.

"We hope that these mistakes will not be repeated and that measures are put in place to prevent them in the future", said Grace Nathan, a lawyer whose mother, Anne Daisy, was on the plane.

"However, the same lack of evidence precluded the investigation from definitely eliminating that possibility".
