How Fiat Chrysler moves on without its iconic CEO Sergio Marchionne

Sergio Marchionne obituary: a great life, in pictures

FCA is a culture of leaders and employees that were born out of adversity and who operate without sheet music, ' Marchionne explained during the presentation.

Reuters reported that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) said on Monday that Alfredo Altavilla, head of its business in Europe, Middle East and Africa had resigned and those responsibilities would go to Manley on an interim basis. Free sheet 20 Minuten interviewed a crisis communications manager on Wednesday who suggested the university hospital should communicate "quickly and transparently" to rein in wild speculation about the cause of death and to preserve its reputation.

Marchionne built the dysfunctional companies into the world's seventh-largest car-maker, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, nearly by force of will, living on a corporate jet crossing the Atlantic to push staff to accomplish what most people thought impossible in a global recession.

The scramble to replace Marchionne led to the resignation of a senior executive who was passed over for the top job, the sources said, and exposed fissures between the Italian and North American sides of the world's seventh-largest automaker.

Underlining the task facing Manley, FCA cut its full-year profit outlook after the weaker-than-expected quarter.

For the past several years, Marchionne had tried to engineer a merger or alliance between Fiat Chrysler and another automaker, driven by the view that auto companies were developing too much duplicate technology in the chase for cleaner engines and electric cars.

In a statement emailed to Business Insider, an FCA spokesperson said, "FCA is not in a position to comment on statements made by University Hospital Zurich". And after the U.S. company emerged from bankruptcy in June that year, Fiat - and Marchionne - took operational control without having to pay a penny.

Marchionne said that he and Elkann "from time to time have these chats" about succession, but the issue would not be decided until next year.

The company then scrambled to put new management in place, to take over from the Italian-Canadian executive who had taken the reins at Fiat in 2004.

He added: "My family and I will always be grateful for what he has done". He had last been seen in public on June 26, at an event in Rome.

Investors purchasing shares in Fiat Chrysler or Ferrari, both of which Marchionne ran, would have had every expectation until a few days ago that they would continue to benefit from his leadership.

FIAT has now taken over Chrysler is the world's seventh biggest vehicle maker.

CEO health was also a hot topic late past year, after the leaders of railroad operator CSX Corp. and USA lender M&T Bank Corp. died on the same day, the former within a couple of days of announcing a medical leave. Fiat Chrysler is listed in NY and Milan. The company has not provided details on Marchionne's illness.
