Where and when to watch Friday's lunar eclipse in the UAE

Another reason not to miss and catch this astronomical treat is that the next longest total lunar eclipse is not expected to occur before June 9, 2123. Mars is about to make its closest approach to Earth in decade and a half-just as the full moon blushes red in the longest "blood moon" eclipse of the century.

As a total lunar eclipse, the Aquarius full blood moon is also known by some Native American tribes as the "Full Buck Moon", since it is around this time of year that new antlers begin to push up through a young buck's forehead. That's about the middle of the afternoon here in Minnesota and western Wisconsin. The best views are reserved for people in east Africa.

Across the world, from the Taj Mahal to the Eiffel Tower, people will turn their eyes to the sky, hoping to see the blood moon, which appears orange, brown or crimson as sunlight is bent through the earth's atmosphere.

Mars and more: Watch the skiesMars is easy to spot low in the southeastern sky in late evening. Opposition occurs when Earth is positioned with the Sun lined up directly behind it, and an outlying planet, such as Mars, Saturn, or Jupiter, lined up on the opposite side.

The good news is that millions of people around the world - from nearly all of Africa to the vast majority of Asia - will be able to see the moon gradually turn a deep blood red during the total lunar eclipse.

The entire eclipse will be visible from across India.

This time, Mars comes the closest to Earth as compared to any time in the last 15 years. Scientists call this kind of moon a "blood moon".

Stargazers in London will have the opportunity to observe the event on Blackheath with the Flamsteed Astronomy Society. This causes the Earth's atmosphere to filter out most of the blue light, making the moon appear red.

Then the Moon will start to gradually come out of Earth's shadow and partial eclipse will end at 3h 49m IST on July 28.

Every time there is an eclipse, the moon passes through the Earth's shadow, but it doesn't always pass through the same part of the shadow. The total duration of the three stages of the eclipse will be longest in Santa Maria di Leuca, in the province of Lecce, Puglia (where it will last 5 hours 32 minutes and 32 seconds) and shortest in Courmayeur, Valle d'Aosta (4 hours 28 minutes and 50 seconds). Astronomers call this interplanetary lineup, "syzygy", since planets appear brighter when they're directly behind Earth and directly in the path of the Sun's light.

Apart from it being century's longest lunar eclipse, Mars will be very close to the moon on the same night. "If there are extra particles in the atmosphere, from say a recent volcanic eruption, the moon will appear a darker shade of red".
