Australian Gov Officials Reportedly Believe Trump is Prepared to Strike Iran

Oil rises on U.S.-Iran tension

"Trump, this is the language of night clubs and gambling halls", said Soleimani, who as Quds Force commander is in charge of the Revolutionary Guards' overseas operations.

The general has been photographed on battlefields from Mosul to Aleppo and his image is plastered on billboards across Iran but he speaks only rarely in public.

Trump's tweet was in turn a reaction to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani's remarks in which he reminded Washington that peace with Iran will be the mother of all peace while war with the country will be the mother of all wars.

He called Trump a "gambler" and said, "You will start the war but we will end it".

During a recent visit to Austria, Rouhani pledged that Tehran will stand firm against the United States threat to halt Iranian oil shipments, saying no other country in the region could export oil if Iran is to be deprived of oil exports. "We are ready to stand against you".

Trump in May withdrew the United States from the Iran nuclear deal, bringing his administration to demand all countries stop importing oil from the Islamic Republic by November or face secondary sanctions.

The US, which in May pulled out of a landmark nuclear deal and said sanctions will be re-imposed on Iran within 180 days, has threatened to cut off access to the American banking system for foreign financial institutions that trade with Tehran.

"Iran is not the same country anymore, that I can say", Mr Trump said while addressing the VFW National Convention in Kansas City, Missouri.

The Iranian commander "knows he has a range of indirect options to needle USA interests across the region", Tobias Schneider, a Middle East analyst at the Berlin-based Global Public Policy Institute, wrote Thursday on Twitter.

Since Mr Trump's decision in May to withdraw the United States from a 2015 nuclear agreement between Iran and world powers, Tehran's clerical establishment has been under increasing U.S. pressure and the prospect of possible sanctions.

A powerful commander in Iran has sent a message warning the United states to stop threatening Iran with war or risk exposing itself to an Iranian response. The Trump administration and its ally Saudi Arabia have accused Iran of providing weapons, including ballistic missiles, and other support to the Houthis, a rebel group that seized control of Yemen's capital four years ago.

Oil prices rose for the third consecutive day on Thursday after Saudi Arabia suspended oil shipments through a strait in the Red Sea after an attack on two oil tankers and as trade tensions between the United States and the European Union eased.

The Iran nuclear deal - which was also concluded with other world powers, including Germany, France, England, Russia, and China - still technically remains in place, as the other countries have vowed to remain a party to the accord despite America's absence.
